The AI Decade Is
a Telco Decade

AI's exponential growth has run into physics, not algorithms. Power, fibre, sovereignty, and edge compute are the new load-bearing constraints. Telia sits at the centre of all four — and the window is now. Intelligence report from 154 verified sources, May 2026.

AI's exponential growth has run into physics, not algorithms.

The most rigorously-argued public forecast (AI-2027, Kokotajlo et al.) places superintelligence between late 2027 and the early 2030s. Even the field's loudest sceptics now put human-level AI at "ten years, maybe twenty." The pessimist case has compressed by a decade in two years. And the infrastructure layer determining who captures this moment is telecommunications.

"Agentic AI may be the first technology capable of altering that trajectory. Unlike earlier automation tools that improved individual tasks, AI agents have the potential to reshape entire workflows — at telco scale, across every vertical simultaneously."
McKinsey, "Telcos' AI Inflection Point", February 2026 — survey of 49 global telecom operators

The Five Structural Facts

From 154 verified sources, probed live on 20 May 2026:

  • AI is a 2026–2028 question, not a 2030 question. Timelines compressed by a decade in two years.
  • The bottleneck is no longer algorithms — it is power, fibre, sovereignty, and edge compute.
  • Stargate: USD 500B committed ahead of schedule. Global AI infra commitments: USD 2T+.
  • Telco revenue CAGR 2024–2027: 0.3%. McKinsey GPUaaS telco TAM 2030: USD 35–70B.
  • Telia Brookfield sovereign AI + Lietuva 5G SA: the pieces are already on the board.

Om Malik / TeleGeography

The four physical bottlenecks — and why Telia owns all of them.

AI's exponential growth runs into four hard constraints. None of them are algorithmic. All of them are infrastructure. Telia, by accident of geography and by deliberate strategy, sits at the centre of every one.

Bottleneck 1
945 TWh
IEA 2030 global data-centre power projection
Power
For Nordic operators with hydro, wind, and cold-climate cooling — power becomes the moat, not the constraint. Global data-centre electricity demand: 415 TWh in 2024, rising to 945 TWh by 2030 (IEA base case). Goldman Sachs projects data-centre power demand up 165% by end of decade versus 2023. PJM capacity-market clearing price for 2026–2027: USD 329/MW-day — more than ten times higher than 2024–2025.
Bottleneck 2
71%
Hyperscaler share of subsea capacity (2024)
Network & Fibre
Hyperscalers now control 71% of subsea-cable capacity. CSP backbone becomes the independence layer. USD 14 billion in new subsea cables enter service 2025–2027 — vs under USD 5 billion total invested 2022–2024. Nokia projects enterprise AI traffic growing at 57% CAGR to 2,192 EB/month by 2033. Telia's RAN partnership with Ericsson (extended November 2025) across Sweden, Norway, Lithuania, and Estonia positions AI-RAN deployment inside the existing upgrade cycle.
Bottleneck 3
EU+NATO
Telia's jurisdiction advantage
Sovereignty
The EU AI Act's high-risk compliance deadline — August 2026 or December 2027 — is now structural and growing. Swedish state ownership, Nordic+Baltic jurisdiction, and full EU regulatory alignment are advantages no hyperscaler can replicate. Orange France's Bleu cloud, T-Systems Industrial AI Cloud (EUR 1B / 10,000 NVIDIA GPUs) — every major telco is building the sovereign story. Telia's is already operational via Cygate.
Bottleneck 4
5G SA
First in Lithuania: Klaipėda Sea Port
Edge & Distributed Compute
By 2030, autonomous AI agents will likely exceed one billion active instances globally. Their traffic profile is machine-to-machine, deterministic, latency-intolerant. Network APIs that expose slicing, edge compute, identity, and verified-quality SLAs become the new revenue layer. Telia Lietuva's first private 5G Standalone at Klaipėda Sea Port (late 2025) is the working reference. USD 35–70B GPUaaS TAM by 2030 flows through exactly this stack.

The Telia Opportunity Window

Among European Tier-1 operators, only Telia combines Swedish state ownership, the SEK 95 billion Brookfield sovereign AI build, and the first 5G Standalone deployment in Lithuania. This is not a future play — it is already happening.

"Brookfield committing SEK 95 billion (~USD 10 billion) to Swedish AI infrastructure, including expansion of the Strängnäs site from 300 MW to 750 MW. Telia operates the sovereign AI cloud on top via Telia Cygate. Telia holds exclusive market rights to sell the AI cloud to Swedish enterprise and public sector. Full Swedish jurisdiction."

Six Recommendations for Telia Technology Day 2026

Five plays for the 2026–2028 window, derived from 154 verified sources. Not all six will be the right moves for every market — but all six are executable from Telia's current position.

R1
Make the Sovereign AI Cloud the Identity, Not the Side Project
The Brookfield partnership is a generational structural advantage. It should be presented at every level — investor day, Technology Day, ministry meeting, enterprise sale — as Telia's primary product narrative, not as a future capability. Sovereign AI cloud delivered by an EU+NATO operator is the rarest configuration in the market.
▶ Brand Telia Cygate sovereign AI as a named offering with a public roadmap. Get first three vertical reference customers public by end-2026: public sector, finance, industrial.
R2
Lead Nordic+Baltic Sovereign AI Procurement
Lithuania's EUR 130M+ national AI Factory is a procurement event waiting to happen. So is Sweden's broader sovereign AI build, Finland's defence-AI investments, Norway's energy-AI deployments, and Estonia's e-government AI integration. Telia should be the default infrastructure partner — not on price, but on jurisdiction and compliance posture.
▶ Create a dedicated Telia Sovereign AI sales motion targeting national-AI-strategy procurement in all five direct markets. Co-staff with Cygate. Public commitments by Q3 2026.
R3
Productise Vertical 5G SA + Edge Inference Bundles
The Klaipėda Sea Port deployment is a working reference. Three bundles: Telia Port Cloud (port logistics + autonomous vehicles + predictive maintenance), Telia Factory Cloud (manufacturing AI + computer vision), and Telia Fintech Compliance Cloud (fraud, AML, KYC, DORA-compliant inference). Each with a measured ROI story and a regulatory differentiator.
▶ Each bundle: sales motion, reference customer, regulatory differentiator. Klaipėda is the template. Replicate across Baltic industrial + fintech verticals.
R4
Treat the EU AI Act as a Sales Asset
The August 2026 high-risk deadline may move to December 2027 — but the underlying compliance obligation is structural and growing. Most enterprises in Telia's footprint are still under-prepared. Telia + Cygate can become the de facto compliance partner for high-risk AI adoption: classification advisory, risk-management systems, audit trails, conformity assessment.
▶ Publish a Telia AI Compliance Reference Architecture for the EU AI Act. Productise as a managed service. Convert a regulatory cost centre into a relationship anchor.
R5
Use Autonomous Network Ops as the Proof Point
Deutsche Telekom: 25% repair-time reduction. Vodafone: >30% reactive-to-predictive ticket shift. Telia's AGM-stated target of ~80% network-optimisation automation by 2026 is competitive but should be measured publicly. Quarterly publication of autonomous-ops metrics turns an internal cost programme into a proof point on every customer-facing slide.
▶ Publish a quarterly Telia Autonomous Network Index. Every metric becomes a sales reference.
R6
Build Programmable Network Primitives for AI Agents
By 2030, autonomous AI agents will likely exceed one billion active instances globally. Their traffic profile is machine-to-machine, deterministic, latency-intolerant, upstream-heavy. Network APIs that expose slicing, edge compute, identity, and verified-quality SLAs become the new revenue layer. McKinsey estimates USD 100–300B; STL Partners USD 100B for NaaS.
▶ Publish a Telia Network API roadmap aligned to TM Forum standards. Pilot agent-traffic-aware slicing with at least two named partners by end-2026.

The connectivity layer was the boring layer for a generation.

The smart kids went to software, then to cloud, then to AI. They built around the connectivity — and on top of it. They priced connectivity like a utility.

That world is over. AI's exponential growth has run into physics: power, fibre, sovereignty, edge. Those four are not software constraints. They cannot be patched in a model. They are owned at national scale by exactly one kind of company.

You are that company.

Telia is not waiting at the side of this transformation. Sweden's largest sovereign AI build, Lithuania's first 5G Standalone, the Nordic+Baltic enterprise relationships, the EU+NATO jurisdiction. The pieces are already on the board. The work for 2026–2030 is to play them as if the next ten years are the ones being decided.

Because they are.
